Will a GPS reciever work in a coat pocket etc

I am considering geting a Holux 236 reciever to go with my PDA, but I was wondering if I need to keep the reciever out in the open or will it work in my coat pocket. Also, if I am out in the car, does the reciever need to be on the top of the dashboard or could it work if just sitting in the ashtray (empty of course).

my 236 lives in the ashtray of my car which is down by the gear stick and regularly gets 6-7 sats it the same if I stick it in the glovebox

so yes it will work in you coat pocket the same gos most sirf3 receivers
