this might be a peculiarity with my PC but it dosnt like a mobile storage device like the tomtom or a card reader being plugged in with a card installed..

had a problem with my PC seeing my tomtom till i remembered i always make sure there isnt a card in my card reader when i plug it in..

followed the same principle with the tomtom and it works every time..

the other thing that might be of help to some readers is some of the older card readers wont work with the new larger sd cards.. mine seems only happy with cards up to 256 meg.. it copies corrupted data with larger cards so if your tomtom dosnt work after useing a card reader with a larger card.. here is another reason why..

i wouldnt mind betting that some of the older tomtoms wont work with the new 1 gig cards either.. my card reader isnt that old..

the same applies to digital cameras.. beyond a certain date most of them wont read a 1 gig card...

i dont know.. perhaps all tomtoms pre-empted the creation of what was then unimaginable sd card sizes..

16 or 32 meg was about the norm when they first came out.. i have a couple of roughly three year old "big" 64 meg ones.. they cost me about 50 quid each i think.. he he

i just paid 11 quid each for a pair of 1 gig jobbies.. how times have changed.. he he

but quite a few two year old devices cant handle em.. some cant handle 512 cards..

the worse thing is some older devices appear to work but once more than xxx amount of data is written to em it gets corrupted.. my roughly eighteen month old card reader does this.. a digital camera i have just writes corrupted pics once it get to 512 megs on a card..

things just seem to get made to handle the size cards available at the time of manufacture.. and its amazing just how the capacity of these things has gone up..

folks take it for granted but not that many years ago it would have take a microdrive and a grand to get 1 gig of portable storage.. now it come free with a packet of cornflakes.. he he
