Hi,

Just wondering what mode most people use when not 'navigating' and purely using the i3 as a speed camera warning.

I prefer 2D track up as it is much quicker at updating and scrolls more smoothly. I still find the 3D maps sticky (even on my brand new 2.70 unit), but only in map mode..navigation mode is fine.

Opinions???

Cheers.

Mussey1. :D

I only tend to use my i3 in 2D mode as the screen is too small to be of use in 3D mode (to justify this I do have other devices that cost considerably more, the i3 is great for what it does at a bargain price), each to their own I supose on this question as its down to what suits the individual - Mike

Personally I think the 3d mode on any sat nav is just a gimmick, and never use it.

3D mode just seems to be a gimick for people who cannot read / interprit maps, makes it more of a computer game than a map. Which i suppose is why Sat Nav exists.

Like most people i rarely look at the screen on mine

I disagree. I'm very capable with maps and have no trouble interpreting them, and I never play computer games.

I also very rarely look at the screen, usually only when the turn instruction is unclear because there are two or more roads close together, but when I do I find a quick glance is all that's needed in 3D mode.

I think it's a question of familiarity with the mode you're used to. I believe my i3 was set to 3D mode when I first used it, and I didn't bother trying the other modes for a while. When I did it seemed strange, so I switched back to 3D. I'm sure if I left it in 2D I'd get used to that.

steve, how can you say that the 3d view is a gimmick....3d is the most realistic to real life visualization..when you drive and look at the road in front ,it looks like the 3d mode, it certainly doesn't look like the 2d mode which is like a birds eye view from above...

I agree. Used my i3 in 3d and now when using my Quest (no 3d option) on the bike it's definitely not as intuitive from the riders viewpoint. BTW I have absolutely no problem with maps and map-reading.

Sorry i didn't mean to upset anyone!

Whilst 3d is the most representative of what you are seeing we are trained, and brain is conditioned, to look at a map from a birds eye perspective, therefore it is much easier to take the information and process it.

When I look at a paper map I tend to lay it flat - I never hold it upright like a satnav screen. I also admit to turning the page in the direction of travel for in-town driving. 3D mode best represents what my brain is trained to do. Wink

My Nuvi was set to 3D as a default and that is what I got used to. I tried 2D as an experiment after the start of this thread but quickly went back to 3D :D

I flirted with 2D for a while but 3D works better for me. Personal preference I guess. To me the i3 appeared to over egg your position a bit in 2D mode... well same mapping, same receiver, but to me relevant to turnings it put you a bit further down the road than you were..... Question

i was using track up all the time so i can see connected raods for shorts cuts incase of traffic ( the gmt 12 is rubbish and only works for main roads). but just tio day i realised if i have it in 3d modes looks nice clear to understand and if you touch the screen it gives you a track up type few to see the road layouts.

i gona stick with 3D now. Smile
