I have a Mio P350 with TTN5 on Windows Molble 5 and its driving me mad
On the main screen in TTN5 I get anything from one to full strenght on the Sat Signal , but even stationary these go up and down and after a 30 sec i lose the signal completely for several seconds then after a while its back again sometimes it will stay on for 5 minutes if I am lucky , Its like it gets a fix on the Sats but cant hold them for long or loses the signal
In the car its even worse as you soon lose the signal and because your moving makes it harder to lock on again So it not usable because the map is going all over the place as it cant get a constant signal to fix its postion correctly
I have downloaded and run WinFast Navigator and done a reset etc , checked all the setting
Setting are
NMEA - Com 2 - BaudRate 4800 -
GGA=1 GGL=0 GSA=5 GSV=5 RMC=1 VTG=1 MSS=0 User=0
I have also installed VisualGPSce
This gives a better indication of signal strengh , the strengh goes up and down alot and even these lose the signal at times but not as much as TTN5
I have just got a Holux GPA Antenna Active L1 Band Model AR 01 all i get with this is a better signal strenght for slightly longer but still it also manages to lose the signal , the only way to get it back on is to disconnect and reconnect it
My TTN5 setting are GPS configuration
Other Cable NMEA GPS
GPS Baud rate 4800
GPS_COM0
In TTN5 GPS Status i get the revolving disc and a No Valid GPS Signal as soon as the signals lost until i get the next fix but then its soon lost again
My Widows5 GPS setting are
GPS program port COM2
GPS Hardware port COM4 Braud 4800
Sorry for the long Post but i am lost at what it can be

At 6:18pm in your other thread I said
Quote:
Sometimes it's best to go back to square one rather than going round in circles. Try......
Start - Settings - System - SysInfo - Clean Boot. Tap Start to begin clean boot.
When finished switch device off with slider at bottom. Leave it a couple of hours then switch back on and re-set your settings.
Download TTN5.21 from TT site and install. Format your SD Card and re-load maps via a Card reader.
Now see if there is an improvement. If not I would guess you have a faulty unit.
If there is an improvement try re-setting NMEA with Winfast to
GGA 1, GLL 1, GSA 1, GSV 5, VTG 1, MSS 0, User 0, User 1, User 0.
The default settings are GGA=1 GLL=0 GSA=5 GSV=5 RMC=1 VTG=1 MSS=0 User=0
GGA = GPS Fixed Data
GLL = Position Lat/Long
GSA = Satellites locked on to
GSV = Satellites in view
RMC = Minimum Data Required
VTG = Course and ground speed
MSS = Beacons
The second user results in a $GPZDA
ZDA = Time and Date
All the above data is sent every second except for GSA which is sent every 5 seconds.
You will see the GSA shows the Sats you are locked on to and yours is set to receive every 5 seconds, try reducing this to 1 second. i.e. GGA=1 GLL=0 GSA=1 GSV=5 RMC=1 VTG=1 MSS=0 User=0 User 0 User 0
If that doesn't work try doing what I said in the Quote above. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Hmm, sounds a bit odd. Might be a faulty unit but a few questions first:
Are you moving or stopped when you have the problems?
Do you have a good view of the sky?
Does it help if you use the GPS outside the car?
I have the problem both stopped and moving , its more of an issue when moving as it takes a long time to get a signal agian
Have a good view of the Sky
Signal strenght does drop a bit inside the car but still a problem outside the car , the signal goes off and on causing the map to move about , another thing is that when you are stationary , ie not moving forwards/ backwards just holding the thing the map revolves around your postion , i have put that down to the fact that i am not moving, it dosnt know what direction i am facing , also the speed flickes from o-5 mph as it drifts about
Tried it on the old push bike today to rule out the car windscreen , but still the same issue , nearly fell off , too busy looking at the Mio did not notice the pot hole

Hmm, it's not too easy to generalise but the status screen should show a very strong, reliable signal from 9 or more sats if you are in an open area (big car park or on a hill) with a good sky view and stationary for a few minutes.
If they are dropping in and out in this situation then your unit is faulty.
Or it could be that you you have an athermic (metalic coated heat reflecting) windscreen like this Peugot or this Zafira (characterised by the bluish or bronze tinge to the windscreens).
In this case you have to put your external aerial in the darkened area behind the rear view mirror for it to work.
Did a Clean Boot and reload TT as per Lost_Property
Got a slightly better signal
Loaded on WinFast to check the settings
When I restarted TT - nothing no signal
Checked all the setting to confirm , all OK
Closed TT and started WinFast - signal OK ( disconnected / exit WinFast)
Stating TT again - no signal
Closed TT and restarted Winfast - no signal
Had to do a Clean Boot to get it back
Reloaded TT , working but still dropping out
Couple of questions about TT
When I close TT its has X sats in view, If I open it up straight away, The GPS Status Window is blank, and it has to look for them again or SHOULD IT SHOW the previous Sats ?? or blank
In the GPS Status Window should the signal strenght be stationary or moving up/down (unit stationary)
The GPS Status Window has a faint blue line about 3/4 from the bottom , what strenght of signal should I be looking for ?

Blank. It can take up to 30 seconds to re-lock.

Fairly stationary but can move up and down slightly. A satellite rising from the horizon will be giving a stronger and stronger signal.

I believe the thin blue line equals a signal strength of 40. You can get a good lock on over 20.
If you go into Winfast and select View - Signal level you can see the number of the satellite, Azimuth, Elevation and Signal strength.

Is it to do with your GPS outputting sirf signal rather than NMEA?
Which got me thinking. Next time you go into Winfast, and before running it, go to Tools - Port setting and choose NMEA Port GPS_HWCOM COM2 and set the Baud rate to 57600 and click OK.
Make sure Winfast is running, the first icon next to View will be highlighted, then tap on the second icon, twin arrows circling, watch the Baud rate change until it settles to 4800.
Go to View - Signal level and wait until you have as many sats locked as possible, at least all those in or around the inner circle on the 'compass'.
Now go to Tools - Disconnect - Tools - Exit.
Wait about 15 seconds then start TomTom. Within 15 to 30 seconds you should see a blue satellite resting on the N of the compass, actually it's all the sats', and within seconds they will all fall in place and you should have blue bars all along.
At this point in time I have a lock on 7 sats, of the 11 in view. The four without a lock are low down on the horizon.
If all this fails and you still have a problem then I guess you may have a faulty unit. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

It may be blank for a few seconds while it contacts the GPS. If the GPS is doing a "cold" start (off for more than 8 hours) then you have to wait 1 to 5 minutes while it locks on to the sats.
If the GPS is doing a "hot" start (ie, it has been switched on in the last few minutes) then it should get a lock within a few seconds.

The strength moves around but how much depends on where you are. If you are in an open area with an unobstructed sky view then you should get pretty much 100% strength on 8 to 12 sats, with the odd one or two dropping to 70% from time to time.
If you can see at least half of the sky then you should get a reliable fix. _________________ Gone fishing!
