town or city location

Hi all,
hope someone can enlighten me as a newcomer to the world of satnav
i've recently bought a garmin c510 deluxe & i know these things are set up to search for postcodes or addresses if they are known, but if i just want to visit a particular town or city i.e b'ham,wolverhampton e.t.c the device wants me to enter an address or postcode, how do i do that without having to enter any of the above.

I don't know about the garmin but most sat navs offer the alternative of just routing to a city centre.
