Is it ok to change cards in the PCMCIA slot whilst my laptop is turned on ? for instance I have my wifi card in it most of the time, but on occasion's I need to use my GPS card. so far I have always turned it off.

Depending on the operating system you are using, you may have a "Safely Remove Hardware" in the Taskbar (bottom right beside clock - the icon looks like a card with a green arrow above it). If so, this MAY allow you to remove the wifi card. Or, if your wifi card has utility software, that may allow you to remove the card. Beware of removing the card permanently, rather than temporarily!!

Thanks BGF but why do you say Beware of removing the card permanently, rather than temporarily!! Doesn't winXP locate different installed hardware every time one boots it up .for instance when I boot up with the wifi card in it should find that and when I boot up with the GPS card in it should find that if I am not mistaken.

I have a Netgear WG511 and that uses "Netgear WG511 Wireless Assistant". The other menu option is "Uninstall Netgear WG511 Software". Some cards will have software like this and some will just use a Windows driver. If I was to uninstall the software, I'd need to re-install it the next time I wanted to use the card.
