TMC Aerial GTM 21 improvements?

Hi
I have a Garmin C510D with GTM 21 integrated FM TMC traffic receiver.
I get reasonable TMC reception, but if I 'hide' the unit under the radio -where I can still see the screen, the TMC reception suffers. Has anyone found a way to 'extend' or improve the TMC wire aerial- preferably without baring the wires. Many thanks,

Garmin techie said he had wound the wire earial around his car aerial lead and got improved signal when I queeried problems with GTM 11 reception.
