As you may be aware, I've got some 'issues' with the performance of my e740...

In a recent thread it was suggested that this could be related to the e740 emulating a serial port on it's USB.

The e740 has 2 storage card slots; would moving to a CF GPS receiver (perhaps with an external antenna or rerad) and maps on an SD card give a significant enough performance increase to justify the cost of switching?

What "issues"?

There should not be an issue on the USB host port. And you are using a USB cable with a USB>serial converter? Or are you using a GPS with a dedicated Toshiba cable?

The issue being that the unit does not perform as quickly as my iPaq 3760. I've done all of the ROM updates and overclocked it to 472MHz but it still does not run as well as my old PDA when running Navigator 2.

It has been suggested that this could partly be due to the fact that the e740 emulates a serial port on it's USB.

I'm using a Haicom 203 GPS mouse and serial cable for the e740

The serial port should not be an issue. Afterall, GPS only run at 4800. So the speed of the com port should not be an issue.

It should be a combination of hardware/software/configuration that make the difference.
You have to make compariosion with identical hardware/software.
Some GPS and some software do run differently in different PDAs.

You did not use the Haicom with your Ipaq, did you?

Yes, I'm using the same Haicom, software, POI etc. The only thing changed is the PDA and the cable to connect it to the GPS mouse.

What you have installed in the PDA also affects the performance.

It's bare, other than Navigator 2, Checkpoint, XScaleCtrl and Tom Tom full UK map and some overlays on the CF card. I've even switched the bluetooth off at the switch and played with the memory settings. Sad
