TomTom map versions are a very emotive subject. TomTom and the retailers advertise their products as having "all the latest TeleAtlas maps" but the versions supplied are variable.
If you purchase TTN5 software and maps of western europe as a CD set the map versions you actually get are 571 for GB plus and 562 for GB.
However if you buy the GB only product on SD card you get GB map version 605.
The map downloadable from the TomTom site (for purchase) is GB plus v632 - so far as I am aware you cannot download the GB only map (ie the non plus version 605) from their site.
So in the TomTom world "latest" is variable and the packaging and their web site have no indication of what you are getting until you have given them your money (non-refundable).
The advertising by the retailer I purchased from contains the laughable statement Quote: | With roads constantly changing TomTom Plus keeps your TomTom up to date by downloading the latest map of your region with new streets and buildings. TomTom update their map data regularly, so keep checking TomTom PLUS or the support section for the latest map. |
We should be so lucky - they never, ever give out details of map versions without a lot of serious hard work and then make dubious statements about where and how they are available.
I am currently in dispute with the retailer but unfortunately my local trading standards dont really understand the difference between software versions, map versions and sat nav in general and they believe that the quote above (which I believe is totally untrue) gets them off the hook ![Crying or Very sad](modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_cry.gif) |

TeleAtlas release maps generally on a 3 monthly cycle - I've read the article of the trip to TeleAtlas when it was posted.
However there are several map versions which have been released during the life of TTN 5.
Do TomTom make anyone aware of this NO!
Do TomTom put the map version out the outside (or even the inside) of their products NO!
Do TomTom release updated maps quarterly apart from the plus products which are priced as accessory products (quote from TomTom web site) NO!
Do TomTom publish the current map version numbers NO!
Do TomTom publish the TeleAtlas source version and date for their maps NO!
Some other suppliers (seems to be the users of NavTeq maps) do give some of this information (AA product uses Q1 2006 maps) TomTom do not.
Under these circumstances the quote above is untrue in all respects. Some bits they could never do (the bit about "keeps your TomTom up to date by downloading the latest map of your region with new streets and buildings" implies a Windows Update type approach which is technically impractical) but releasing new maps (on a quarterly basis?) on a subscription basis or even on a one-off charge IS doable, TomTom have chosen not to.
Their support pages do talk about what could be a new approach
Quote: | Introducing a new map update program. Starting in the second quarter of 2006, existing TomTom customers will be able to purchase the latest maps at a discount. Each map package also includes free updates to the TomTom software. |
If we are really lucky this wont be just a one-off refresh and would appear to officially acknowledge that the product is free and you may for the maps (while this is effectively what happens at present, technically you pay for the software).
We can, at least, live in hope. How much hope is open to debate! |
