I ran across some updated content on the TomTom web site today.

Quote:
The future of digital mapping
There are probably two main areas where advances are being made in ways that are important to make getting from A to B even easier.

The first is in the quality of the maps themselves. Enhanced visualisation should enhance your driving experience. In particular areas like 3D, elevation models and landmarks, have enormous potential.

The other is in a technology called 'incremental updating'. Basically this means that only that part of the database that is added, deleted or modified, is handed onto you; the map user. Which could help greatly in the constant battle to reduce the delay between changes occurring out there on the roads and those changes appearing on your map.

This is really what a lot of people have been hoping to see happen for a long time. Does this mean we will soon be able to download small map updates each quarter from TomTom as Teleatlas updates their maps? If so, how would they price the incremental updates? I'm not sure if this is actually talking specifically about TomTom or if this is pulled from the TeleAtlas marketing materials but it sure got my attention. At the same time I'm not expecting to see this anytime soon.

sounds like a way forward but the burning question is costs. i reckon people would be happy to pay a reasonable amount for the benefit of higher accuracy mapping but who decides whats reasonable?

I ran across this PDF from 2004 that goes in to the technical details of how incremental map updates could be implemented. If the timeline in the PDF is still correct it looks like we won't be seeing incremental updates for a few more years. http://www.ertico.com/download/actmap_public_documents/2005-06%20ActMAP_approach_ITSinEurope.pdf

Here's the home page for ActMap although I'm not clear on what the current state of the project is. There doesn't seem to be much information about it beyond January 2005. http://www.ertico.com/en/subprojects/actmap/objectives__approach/objectives__approach.htm
