A useful little trick (if you're on a monthly tarriff for data): if you configure the download to disconnect after every little update session the data becomes so small that it's impossible for the operator to charge.
My vodaphone bill is full of negligible data downloads, rounded down to £0.00 per session! |

So, how do you do that then? |

Have a look at T-Mobile web'n'walk tarriffs. I think they do "unlimited" (fair use = a gig or so a month) for £7.50 on top of your normal rental.
Dunno if it's on PAYG though... _________________ Gone fishing! |

I drive 3000 miles a month tomtom and traffic on all the time - I use an old handset on a normal payg orange tarifF for this only stayin the car permanently plugged into a power socket as the battery is shot.
add 10 quid every 6 - 8 weeks have it it set for 15 minute updates - mostly reliable - but not great - use the rds radio updates as well.
so gprs costs are forgettable against the 450 quid of diesel I put in each month. _________________ -----------------------------------------------------------
