Tom Tom Rider not charging - my error or faulty machine

My Tom Tom Rider charges fine from the mains adaptor supplied with the machine.

The bracket on my bike appears to be pushing out the necessary 5v to the little gold pins (using an electric meter)

BUT when the Rider is mounted on the bike it appears not to be charging and conks out eventually.

It's a shame there's no indicator (green) light on the unit to let you know whether its receiving power.

Am I doing something wrong; is there a work around (it's a the 5v input socket is at the base otherwise I'd just plug a 12v adaptor outputting 5v into the base)....or is my machine most likely faulty?

There might not be a charging light, but if you tap the lower right hand corner of the screen it will show you the battery status, and whether or not the unit is being charged.
