Having spent over three years with Copilot 3 on my Compaq Navigation System, I can handle the male TTS voice that a few of you SatNav connoiseurs seem to find somewhat annoying.

Having just bought CP6, I now notice a couple of backwards steps:

1) CP3 used to correctly pronounce "turn left on A5.." with "A" pronounced as "ay". However, CP6 pronounces it as "uh", as in "can't someone write a [uh] program without bugs.."

2) CP6 uses street names far less than CP3 - in CP3 if there was a street name, it gave it. Now it only seems to use streetnames if there is no road number.

Anyway, while hacking around, I've found the "ubuild.txt" file which appears to give some pronunciation help to the TTS system

it reads:

Quote:
UKEnglish
calle #K'ahLex#
copilot #KowP'ayLohT#
invalid #ihNV'aeL"ihD#
live #Lay'V#
login #L'ohGihN#
strasse #STR'aqSer#
via #V'iyaq#
vägen #V'eyGexN#
weg #VeyG#

What do you reckon? is this somewhere where I can enter the following line:

Quote:
A #Ey#

Many parts of the country would say that it has been corrected!

Nope - perfect English

To be honest, apart from the occasional amusing pismronunciation, I've been amazed at how damn good the TTS is.

UPDATE

Not exactly a pronunciation issue, but certainly TTS-related

I noticed yesterday on my way into Birmingham what I believe to be a problem with CP6's TTS - it baulks at brackets in the text.

I had always liked the fact that on CP3, the voice command went something like

Quote:
"1 mile ahead, turn left on A452, Chester Road"

On screen, this was shown as "A452 (Chester Road)"

However, CP6 never gives me the "Chester Road" bit, just the "Turn left" and "A452"

I thought nothing more of it, putting this down to "progress" at ALK

However, yesterday, (approaching Spaghetti junction) the on-screen command looked something like:"Birmingham (City (A38 - M))"

All I got from my PDA was an entirely inadequate

Quote:
take Birmingham

I'm guessing that the presence of an open bracket throws the TTS

Could this also be the reason why the speed camera warnings don't get recited in full?

The '@' sign stops CoPilot from reciting any more text in the speed camera message. Converting the '@' character to ' AT ' solves the problem. Not all punctuation does that, in that ':' is (rather annoyingly) recited as 'colon'.
