Am i right in assuming that the external aerial for the x10 models is the same one as used for the TomTom ONE model.

Yes it is,

You should not need one for almost all applications, due to the sirfstar3 chipset, but if you do just use a TTone version

OK after a couple of days trying it out, my findings are that in the middle of the windscreen it takes a while to get a fix but once it has it then it is fine- wall to wall sats. But it does seem to take a while in the first instance.
The external antennas are in Halfords for 19.99, i snagged one off a dealer on fleabay for 4.99 +p&p so i thought well why not.
