|
|
I just took delivery of a toshiba E755 Pocket PC , which on first impressions I'm very pleased with.
I only want to use it as a GPS system for my car , but as I'm new to all this I though I'd ask the advice of the people who know..
So..
What type of GPS card/reciever do i need ??
Do I need more memory for the maps ??
What about some sort of cradle and power supply ??
Finally , Which software ??
The unit has 2 slots on the top , 1-Type I/II CF Card Slot (3.3V), 1-SD (Secure Digital) card slot (3.3V)
Thanks in advance for any help

Phil,
here are the suggestions (in the order of preference)
GPS system:
- best would be a bluetooth GPS receiver - no wires involved, and you can position it freely in your car for best reception (needs clear view to the sky and doesn't like athermic windscreens). Prerequisite: 755 must support BlueTooth.
- second best is a serial GPS receiver (wire connection but still somehow freely placeable (again requires a serial port - not sure if the 755 has one)
- lastly, CF GPS receivers. Those mostly suffer from being unable to adjust the antenna to a horizontal position (there's a few exceptions like the sysonchip CF receiver that has a different type of antenna that can actually point up)
Memory: Get a 256MB CF or SD card (CF is slightly faster) - that should get you going with all your map needs.
Cradle:
- have a read around the user mounts on this site - lots of good suggestions
Software
You will have to identify what exactly you want to achieve with the navigation. Will it be just for fun or do you want to completely abandon paper maps and relyon GPS for your daily extended business trips? In any case, voice guidance capabilities are a must, and most packages support it nowadays.
Hope this gets you started,

Thanks for the info.
I'm mainly wanting to do as you said and get rid of the paper maps and just use the gps for route finding and speed camera database,
If i understand you right, I'll need a flash card gps reciever and an SD card 256 memory for the maps.
if posible could you answer the following questions for me ?
does the reciver need an extra power supply (2 cigarette lighters ?)
and are all the cradle type things and mounts a standard size or will i need one specifically for my model
Thanks again

If you go for the CF based receiver then you do not need an additional power supply. The card is powered through the PocketPC.
As for the mount - this depends on how much "sleekness" you want. The better looking mounts are generally more specialized to your type of Pocket PC, and they tend to be more expensive. Make sure the mount has a very tight grip on the Pocket PC and will not allow it to fall out during your driving and stopping (you don't want to see the Pocket PC flying through the cabin or hitting the floor, do you?) _________________ Lutz
