Can anyone please tell me what the diffrence is between the standard map that came with my navigator 5 and the plus maps that Tomtom offer?

The Plus-Map covers a specific country at Street Level, plus the intergrated Major Roads of Europe.

If you have TTN5 then the Plus-Maps will be on the CD's with the Country Specific Maps. The Plus-Map is some 200MB bigger.

The Maps that TomTom have as part of their Plus Service, can be a Map of a City, Area, Country or Western Europe. They contain no more detail that the Street Level Maps on the CD's.
