HELP - Distance Measurement - eXplorist 200

First post here! Name's Bryan, nice to meet you all. I own a Magellan eXplorist 200 and use it primarily for hiking. One thing I noticed however is its distance accuracy when tracking. In New Hampshire, according to many trail guides, I was 4.9 miles into the woods. My GPS said I was 3.1 miles in. I trusted it more than my own instincts and continued to press on. It was quite a shame, but I screwed up my whole hike that time because of it.

I took a hike today and my pedomiter said I walked 4.8 miles (but it occasionally misses steps, I think it was a bit over 5). My GPS said 3.5 miles. Similar miscalculations happened in between today and all the other times I used it as well.

It's not a gigantic problem as I use it more for coordinate inputs than distance, but it definatly is a pain in the ass. What's going on with it?! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
