Hi,

I am going to buy a system to use in my motorhome, mainly in France and EU. My problem is that its a complicated world out there(!) and I dont have the knowledge to even know what I'm looking for!
I have a Palm V which I dont use, so had thought about getting compatible hardware/software to be able to make some use of it. Presumably I would also need a car cradle or similar?
I am also a Mac user and do not posess a PC, so I need software which is Mac compatible.
I guess this might limit my options..?
What do you suggest?
Should I use the Palm V or go for a complete new system?
What software is available (if any) to load onto the Palm via Mac?
Or is it a case of just buying a complete integrated unit so compatibility isnt an issue, and if so, can I get updates etc without a PC?
Thanks

Ok! Many points here so let's take them one at a time.

1. I have nothing against the Palm platform but it won't service your requiremnts for a GPS Navigation system, there is very little choice in this area so you need to consider a PocketPC.

2. PocketPC's connect via ActiveSync with PC's, this is not Mac compatible Crying or Very sad However ActiveSync will run fine under VirtualPC on Macs, if there are other workarounds then hopefully more experienced Mac users will chip in?

3. A cradle to hold your PPC in a suitable position is a must have, depending on your motorhome there may be a Brodit bracket that suits or alternatively one of the many other options are sucker mounts, vent holders etc.

4. As for software then it really boils down to TomTom Navigator or NavmanSmartST. For GPS hardware this depends on the model of PocketPC you opt for, ideally Bluetooth or a Mouse type GPS, again we need to know if your primary use is in vehicle on 12v power or if you may wish to use GPS away from the vehicle.

5. And at risk of confusing you even more, you may wish to consider a completely integrated system such as Navmans iCN630 or Garmins Streetpilot range, these are solely designed for navigation though so you lose all the pluses of a PPC, user POI's, all the other software you could use i.e. currency converters, travel guides, email and web access etc.

Have a browse around our site, read some reviews and feel free to ask more questions, it's nowhere near as complicated as it all looks at first site and the benefits for a European Tour are huge, your wife will love not having to read a map Wink
