Hello

I recently bought the Tom Tom gps receiver to go with TT5 for my pda. But it often takes several minutes to pick up a signal. Should I expect this? It's the SiRF2 chip so I was expecting it to fly.

cheers

It depends...

- initial fix can take up to 12 minutes (stationary)
- if the backup battery is dead, same applies every time
- if you don't use the receiver for a while, same applies
- if you just used it, switch it off and then on it should get a fix much quicker, sub 60 second.
- if the satellite constellation is not right, it may take longer even under ideal conditions. (five sats in a row are no good for triangulation)

Ok, thanks. I just wanted to check if I'm likely to have a faulty unit or not. I guess not. I don't use it every day, which might have something to do with it. I also find that it's quicker to start from home. Perhaps the trick is to carry the receiver and start it up as I walk to the car.

thanks

SRiF2 is your problem. This is very old now and you should really be using SRiF3. However your time to first fix is typical.
