Hi all, a little bit of advice for anyone wanting to hardwire the little gem into the motor. for a mere few pennies (43 in fact) you can purchase this little old gadget, its a 12v to 5v reducer from maplins, dead easy, three legs, one is earth, one is 12v in, the last is 5v out, regulated at 1a max!

good eh! Wink

Now you just need to source the connector to the i3, prob sell em at maplins to? - Anyone know the name of them?

Hope someone finds this useful, remember that you need to reduce the voltage from 12v to 5v else the i3 will fry!

Mini USB B type connector.. If anyone uses the 12--5 volt reducer ..IT WILL GET HOT So bear this in mind when positioning.

You should have picked up one of these whilst at the store http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=43998&criteria=USB%20Connectors&doy=5m3
As for getting hot yes, so beware of prolonged use in confined locations, secondly these plugs are difficult to make off, You will need to know the electrical pin out of the connector, get this wrong and bye-bye i3 - so be carefull - I would just use the existing car lead mounted into a free additional 12V cigy socket (Maplins do these as well) - Much easier, and less chance of damage to the unit - Mike

That's just a linear* voltage regulator - you'll need to add bulk decoupling capactors (at the very least) to get a useable 5V output. You'll also need a reasonable heatsink, as it's going to throw out over 4W of heat 8O

(*The standard i3 adaptor uses a switch-mode voltage regulator which doesn't have any of the heat problems)
