hi yall, does anyone know where i can get (and what to ask for) a cable that will connect my tomtom in car pda holder (which usually plugs in the cigarette lighter) directly into the cars electrics. i belive you call this a "hardwire"?
also what to do with the wired reciever? i drive a VW transporter van and taking the reciever out all the time is a real pain in the a**. where is the best place to put it?
thanks
steve

In reply to your first question the normal way to do this is to take a live )either switched or permanent) off of something behind the dash (often the radio) and wire in an in line ciggy socket. Then plug in the ciggy adaptor tape it up so it doesnt fall apart and hide it all behind the dash. Dont cut off the wires to the ciggy adaptor and wire them in direct because the adaptor acts as a voltage reducer - most PDAs use about 5V.

This is the safe option but the coiled lead can be a pain! If you have a Tomtom oem cradle (check to see if it has a data plate which should read 12 - 24v and a diagram showing +ve pin). If you have this you can safely use a suitable plug to fit the cradle .(take your old one to Maplins to match) and solder on two lengths of car wireing cable ,one live from the centre pin with an inline fuse (+ve) to a live feed and the other one to an earth point (-ve)..You could of course use a new cradle plug ,standard cig plug and new non coiled wire

Regarding the perminant placing of the wired Gps mouse..there are a couple of issues..Security and heat ..I left my mouse on the dash in the Summer and the heat fried it to to point of distortion ,luckily Tomtom replaced it.

sorry forgot to add.... You could of course do as peterc10 suggested but use a new cradle plug ,standard cig plug and new non coiled wire.
