I've been looking around for some time trying to figure out what to do in regard to GPS products. Until the advent of PDA-based solutions, most products were targeted at a particular use. However, now that PDA-based solutions are out there, is it possible to use a PDA and GPS receiver (integrated/bluetooth/sleeve/whatever) to run different software packages aimed at different uses? I would certainly want to use it driving, but I'm also an avid kayaker and would like the ability to load charts on as well. In addition, I travel to some fairly remote global locations and it would be nice to have some form of map-based location function for that as well (which I could use both hiking and aboard a small boat). Is it really as simple as having a few different software packages loaded on the PDA and picking the one I want for a given use, or does one really need separate hardware (for example, Fugawi has nice topo solutions but doesn't appear to have turn-by-turn driving software -- many products exist to do tbt driving but then don't have a marine or hiking function). I've poked around the net and around in manufacturers' and retailers' sites but can't really find a good answer to this question, which I would think would be a common one . . .

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, PDA based solutions can support all the scenarios you mentioned.

You will have to buy separate software for each of the use cases, but can use the same hardware.

For the outdoors activities you will want to protect your devices appropriately (Otterbox etc) and you need to think about alternative power sources (solar panel).
