Car mini USB & hardwiring???

Hi Guys

I'm looking to hard wire (permantenly) a Holux GPSlim GR-236 to my new car to enable it to switch on and off with the ignition.

What do I need to do this?

Do I just chop the cigarette lighter cable and splice it onto the cars loom?

Any help, pointers & links appreciated.

No you must not do that.

You must have a voltage regulator (12v>5v), which your cigararette lighter plug is, in between the car battery and your device.

The best way to do it is to buy an extension lighter socket from say Maplins, then wire that to the back of your cars lighter socket and plug the Holux plug into that. You can hide it all behind the dash, but be very careful with the wires etc, as not to effect the airbag(s) in any way.

If your cars lighter socket is not controlled by the ignition on/off then you would need to find a wire that is near the fuse box to patch the extension socket to that is switched.

That way you keep the original plug/power adapter from the Holux and you know the voltage will be correct.
