Hello all,

I'm trying to find a GPS receiver for a number of different purposes. Basically I would like one I can use with my phone and laptop (Apple Powerbook) and one that can also be used standalone - unless of course there is software suitable for my phone that might replicate the functionality of something like a Garmin etrex.

I would like to use the GPS receiver with my phone for when I'm driving around as sat nav but would also like to use the receiver for when I go walking or cycling, so one with a screen or alternatively software for my phone that can help me with that would be perfect. My phone is a nokia N70 so basically looking for a GPS receiver with a screen and bluetooth! Unless you can recommend otherwise?

Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

Welly

I think you are looking for a stand alone GPS unit. The problem is you can use your phone with a Bluetooth GPS without a problem, running tomtom mobile (i have the same one) but the receiver only picks up satellites so there is no screen or instructions as these would come from your phone or PDA device.

What you could do is either:

Mobile GPS

Use your mobile phone, get tomtom mobile which comes with a Bluetooth receiver.

Stand alone unit

Buy a standalone unit with a built in GPS receiver which has the screen and instructions, this is where you need to see if you need it to be able to go from bike to car easily.

PDA based

Again like above you could get a PDA with satnav software that you could mount in the car and on the bike (3rd party mount required).

What I have:

I run tomtom mobile on my Nokia N70 and use headphones when I am on my motorbike and it works fine, I can also use it in the car and you only need to carry your phone and the GPS receiver.
