I have just purchased the above and am disappointed that you can not upgrade to v 5.420 with out deleting voices as per the advice on the Tom Tom website, surely they should supply a card capable of doing the upgrade, mine was 128 Mb. Currently I have changed my card for a 2 Gb and copied the software to the new cad, upgraded and all is well.
Unfortunately I have found a few roads missing off the map that have been around where I live even though the roads have been around for a couple of years, not exactly accurate!
My question is, will Medion or any other maps work in this unit or am I stuck with the ones supplied?
No doubt Tom Tom wil offer an upgrade shortly at some huge cost but why should I pay for current accuracy on a unit that I have only purchased in the last 14 days.
Please advise
Other than that I am pleased with the speed of calculation and re routing. |

To get the cheapest possible retail prices every manufacturer makes these sacrifices. The pre-installed voices for every language are unnecessary anyway, why not backup and then delete all the languages you don't need?

No. Each manufacturer uses their own proprietary format and these are not interchangable.

TomTom have some of the cheapest map updates available, the last costing approx £70 which is very much cheaper than others. The maps will never be up to date as it takes up to 24months between data capture by the mapping companies and the availability of that data to companies such as TomTom.
If you bought a paper map from WH Smiths and then found an update had been released shortly after would you expect a free copy? Digital mapping is no different. _________________ Darren Griffin |

In reply to Darren:
Thank you for your swift concise words.
1. The only voices loaded were One male and one female therefore it would not be easy to unload the "Pre installed" voices as they were not loaded. I therefore suggest for a few pounds more Tom Tom supply a 256 Mb card.
2. Fine I am stuck with out of date maps, other suppliers such as Mio are up to date and seem to be more accurate though I do not have personal experiance of this.
3. I did not look to find a cheap soloution, indeed buying a larger SD memory card to add the extra maps that I intended to purchase will have cost me more overall than buying the Mio 269+ with built in 250 Mb storage and maps of Europe.
I now wish that I had purchased an alternative unit as all I was after was a pocketsize accurate portable Sat Nav with a large screen. If I can I will return the unit to whence it came.
4. I accept that paper maps can be out of date but surely in this world of the information high speed age no electronic maps should be more than say 6 months out of date, if they are then minor updates should be made available free of charge with major updates as in computer software being chargeable.
If the box on the shelf had said that I was purchasing a unit that could contain maps that may be upto two years out of date then I would certainly not even considered purchasing this unit as this is proving difficult to carry out my own job to the level required.
I look forward to further comments. |

There are, I believe, only two GPS map suppliers to the "trade". They are both supplying maps that are out of date. You should find that each is better in some areas than others. _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

The sat nav that came in my brother 05 plate car when he brought it 6 months ago was 2 years old :P
Tom Tom provide a major update once a year and occasionly smaller map upgrades like the recent ones its the trouble with mass produced units is that say Dixons will be in so many tousands and it might take them 6 months before they are finally shifted out of warehouse into the store where it might take say another month.
You were just unlucky the data is 99% complete and for most people once a year is too frequant. |
