Car-GPS snap to road accuracy

Just some obsevations on car GPS accuracy. Often, where I have missed a turn or on a complex motorway flyover the GPS will 'hang on' to the route it thinks I am on for about 100 metres before 'jumping' to where it thinks I am. Once 'we' are driving down the same bit of road it is usually spot on.

On Boxing Day I switched on the GPS, having reached my position with the GPS off 2 days previous. It established my position to within 40 yards. After a 50 yard drive and a turn it snapped to the right road. Then it went ape.

I turned off an estate and drove along an unclassified road - tree lined and on the top of a hill and the GPS snapped to a parallel road ONE Mile to the north. It continued happily on this road until I removed power from the GPS and forced a relocation.

That is the largest 'snap to road' error that I have seen.

It sounds like you didn't have a very good fix due to the tree cover.

The GPS does get some outlandish ideas about it's position when you have poor reception. 1 mile is quite impressive though. 8O
