My mate who i wrote about who has just bought a Road Angel Navigator has had it stolen! He was parked in a busy street in daylight, and they smashed window, took cradle, charger and unit
He has been advised by the manufacturer that this unit can be blocked if its stolen, I have tried to find out how, because i think its when whoever nicked it tries to do update it wipes sd card, but any clever criminal(if there is such a thing) would copy sd card just in case wouldnt they?
Please help me to help him put his mind at rest, is there a chip inside they can block or is it what i thought, wiping the sd card on trying to update, the company "Blackspot" would not tell him how they do it! I would want to know if £600 of my gear had been snatched!
Any help grettly appreciated

This is a difficult one. I don't know the answer, but looking at it from the manufacturers point of view it would be foolish to publish how they protect their systems. As soon as you provide details about how the unit is protected you will get lots of people trying to crack it.
Another fact to consider is that this really doesn't act as a deterrent to the thief. They don't really care if the unit is locked or not updateable. They rarely use them themselves, but they sell them on. _________________ Mike Barrett
Thanks Mike, yes i agree but it had a "web-track" plate on it which he bought from my shop, we use them on our display pc's and laptops, To buy the sofware in PC world its 50 quid a time, but we buy licence for 50 and it works out much cheaper, if the metal stuck on plate is removed(and that is hard enough) it leaves a un-removable emossed"THIS UNIT IS STOLEN" on it, so any shop like cash converters, or anyone with sense seeing that plate with serial no on it, would expect the cd-rom and software manual that accompanies it surely???
i would, its big enough, the poice will find it, because when you log onto their web site you enter your unique code and it locates the EXACT location of what it is attached to.
Anyway at least he getting insurance money to get a proper sat nav! (no offence to other road angel owners!!)
(runs and hides)
Happy Xmas all!!!!!!
