Just received my new Copilot 6 in the post this afternoon. Not had chance to test it yet but just had a look at some of the Maps for the Republic of Ireland. As I now live over here!
Having not got to the 100% coverage mark in the Republic of Ireland yet, I was looking forward to upgrading from version 5 to 6. This is a post for anyone in the Republic thinking of upgrading. I would say unless you live in one of the major cities such as Dublin, Cork, Limerick etc, there is next to nothing that is new. From what I've seen, it seems that the coverage outside the major cities has declined. Yes that right. There are fewer streets in version 6 than in its predecessor.
I asked this question to ALK, BEFORE, I upgraded to CP6.
Dear ALK,
Just a quick question regarding the map coverage for Republic of Ireland.
I have Copilot 5 for PPC at the moment and was just wondering how much extra coverage there is for the South in the new Copilot 6. I have read on the internet that the maps will be 100% at the end of 2005. I realise it may take another year before this gets to the consumer, but what percentage of the country would be covered in CP6 compared to CP5?
This is the response I received.
Dear sir
There have been a significant improvement on our Ireland much more so than in version 5 but its difficult to say exactly how much of an improvement there is an by what percentage this information has not been provided by our mapping company nave. I can only say that there has been a vast improvement the original version 5 maps for version 6
Kind Regards,
Lovely response. I thought right. There must be some improvement, as anything is a bonus. Much to my horror, there seems to be less detail. Oh yes, the North of Ireland has now been fully mapped 100%. Thats great, but it wasn't the question I asked. I asked about the Republic of Ireland, the North is completely different. The Pocket GPS website, had a 3 page review some time last year explaining the difficulties of mapping Ireland. It is difficult to navigate around Ireland, so thats why I wanted updated maps.
The amount of backroads in Ireland are vast. If more than 5% of the roads are on there, Id probably be overestimating it. However, in CP5, where these backroads were, there was about 10 metres worth of them mapped, before they just suddenly ended, so at least you knew something was there. Now it seems all these little 10 metre indicators are missing.
I must say for the Republic of Ireland maps, it wouldn't be worth upgrading. Maybe some major roads are updated, but that doesn't warrant an upgrade. Im just wondering if they are indeed going to finish mapping Ireland by next month, (as quoted in the review on the pocketgps website and others) and why haven't they put anything else into CP6 over the last year. Surely they have mapped something! And if they are finishing mapping by next month, why hold back whats already been mapped? As far as Im concerened I bought the same package I did 12 months ago, bar the new features in the application.
I have no doubt that the mapping for the UK is well covered. I have no qualms about the quality of that and am in no position to comment. But as bad as the maps are for the Republic, they should be getting better, not worse! Some major towns in the Republic have not been mapped either. Kilkenny for one is classed as a city. This hasn't been mapped properly either. The list is pretty endless. I just want people to know what they are letting themselves in for. Basically, if you live in the Republic, stick with CP5.
The area names used in Dublin are still not on CP6. This is a pain because you have to navigate to the right street by using a particular area code. I wouldn't imagine anyone really knows every area under each code. Its like having to know what every post code is in the UK before you select your street. If you get the code wrong, you could end up on a street with the same name in some other part of Dublin.
www.mapquest.com seem to be done by Navteq. They have masses of roads that do not appear in CP6. I really am disappointed in the quality for the Republic.

All I can say is that in Copilot 6, all the M, N, and R roads have been 100% mapped. Dublin to Greystones has got 100% street level mapping. Then you have Waterford, Cork, Limerick and Galway with 100% street level mapping too. The rest of the map is just M, N, and R roads. I presume that there have been some updated roads since CP5, such as the N11, M50 but I cant find any others myself.
Republic of Ireland has only got a total of 39% mapped at the moment. I hope this jumps up to 100% by this time next year. Navteq will complete the mapping of R.O.I. this month, but it will take another 9-12 months before anyone can get their hands on it.

If by the new motorway you mean the extension to the M50 around Dublin, then yes it has. The N11 up the east coast from Rosslare Harbour has been re-done in CP6 and now links up with the extension to the M50 going around Dublin which will bring you straight up to Dublin Airport, in the North. I think this is what you were asking?
That's strange Steve as the M50 doesn't seem to fully mapped on the MapQuest maps.
BTW I posted this reply about Ireland I got from NavTeq in the General forum but I will repeat it here.

Dear Kevin McElroy,
We are pleased to inform you that our investigation of your reported Map Feedback has been completed. Here is the detailed resolution from our database tracking system:
The major road has been added to the NAVTEQ database. This has been carried out during NAVTEQ's drive to map every road in Ireland by the end of 2005.
NAVTEQ delivers regularly scheduled map updates to our business partners which include many database enhancements. The release dates for these products will vary depending on each individual business partner. If you are interested in an updated map for your navigation system, please contact your system provider or review this link for NAVTEQ’s distribution partners, http://www.navteq.com/ProductFinder?Language=en&action=location&path=mapupdate
Please let us know if you find any additional areas that we need to review. Once again, thank you for contacting us and for visiting our website.
Sincerely,
Barbara Clark, Consumer Support Specialist

Looking at CP6 and MapQuest, I can only find the R113 (Leopardstown Road) that is the missing link between the N11 and the M50. Admitedly, you do have to turn off the N11 onto the R113 and then go round 2 roundabouts before joining the M50, but its only 2km in length.
The M11/M50 is virtually linked, apart from 2km of R road. Maybe this has changed and the N11/M50 is now fully linked. I admit I haven't been on the M50 in a good while.

Looking at the CP6 map of Ireland, these are the only named places that are on there: Gorey, Carnew, Shillelagh, Tinahely, Coolgreany, Aughrim Lower, Arklow, Rathdrum, Wicklow. Through most of these places, there's just an 'R' road. To be honest its not really worth upgrading for an updated N11 and a new type of interface that is CP6.
The above link is a pretty good ordnance survey map of Ireland. It has every place name in the country on it. It also shows all the backroads that are missing from CP6. Unfortunately, it doesn't give street level detail for towns that are outside of the Dublin/Bray areas. It doesn't allow you to zoom in for the level of detail that you can get when you look at Dublin.
Just to rectify an error I made in an earlier post about the N11 and M50. In CP6 the new part of the M50 does NOT appear in CP6. According to CP6 you would still have to turn off onto the Leopardstown road to get onto it. The new part of the M50 veers left from the N11, about half a mile past Woodbrook Golf Club.
This gives the current coverage of Navteq maps for different countries. Apparently Navteq will be finsihed mapping ALL of Rep. of Ireland this month. Lets hope that Copilot 7 will have 100% coverage this time next year.
I may be interested in CP6 as I have an iMate Jasjar running Windows Mobile 5, however I have to say CP5 runs perfectly on it in portrait mode and not sure if landscape is worth the cost :-)
There is no doubt about the above map's detail but it is very out of date as ther M50 only goes to Tallaght!
It's a pity they don't include major projects such as motorways as they would surely know they are under construction when compiling the data, they could request a completion date and perhaps have the program prompt whether the road is open or not?
With the Govt spending around €20 billion on transport perhaps Navtech should take this into consideration!

Navteq only have the roads put into the database when they can physically drive on them. The same thing happened with the M6 Toll Road around Birmingham. That was being planned for years, but it never made its way into the map database until Navteq actually drove the route.
I can see their (Navteqs) point, as they want accuracy, but at the same time it can be annoying as everyone knows where the road is going to be put because of the plans.
