I don't use my 700 all that much, but I'm finding when first switched on it can take five or ten minutes to lock on to a GPS signal. Quite often then it will quickly build up to four or five blobs on the signal meter. This is not much use when I'm navigating away from somewhere unfamiliar, since I have no idea how to begin. Does this mean that (a) I have a faulty unit, (b) I need an external aerial, or (c) something else?

Thanks for that, Eldar - really useful site, and very informative page. I really appreciate it. How much difference to the process do you think an external aerial would make?

not a lot in under the "open sky" conditions, but could make a massive difference in a car with athermic windscreen or if your GO doesn't have a clear view of the sky. To check your GPS performance find an open space and see what values you are getting on your GPS Status screen - a couple of sats should be showing the signal-to-noise ratio just around 40-41. |
