Lesson learned

I bought a set of US maps for a visit to the States a couple of weeks ago.

One thing I hate is hiring a car at an airport and trying to find the hotel in a strange city. My Mio + TomTom worked like a dream in Memphis.

However, when I got to the hotel, I unloaded the car and took everything up to my room, then returned to the car to move it 10 yards past teh barrier and into the car park.

There was a notice on the barrier saying that it wasn't working, and a hotel employee told me to drive into the street and use the public entrance.

The street was one-way and the entrance to the car park was coned off, so I just had to drive through horrific traffic, in the dark and rain, with no idea where I was.

My GPS and phone were in the hotel room - why would I need them for a 10-yard drive.

It took me almost an hour to get back.

As the American Express advert says, as far as GPS is concerned: Don't leave home without it!
