Does the mapping data include TMC codes? I note from a quick web search that the RNS unit (*) supports TMC, but you can buy CDs with and without the TMC codes - obviously with the CD without the codes you will not get any traffic information!

(*) - This information is based on the TeleAtlas RNS unit that uses CDs, I can find no information on the web on the newer unit that uses Navteq and DVDs - which may not have TMC support at all.

I'll also note VAG have no licensing deal with iTIS Holdings who supply TMC data in the UK, so it may be a licensing issue more than a data issue.

As stated, to receive TMC you need both a TMC enabled receiver and a TMC enabled Map disk.

I had a surprise today! (good!)

I too have an new model A4 with the DVD GPS. The TMC has been inoperative since new and AUDI say it will become available in the summer, BUT...

This afternoon the red crossed out TMC on the dash turned green (without the cross) and the blanked out TMC on the SatNav Screen became live. but only for a few minutes. It came back twice more for short periods.

I was driving at the tme so it was difficult to fiddle arounf but I went to 'info' 'setup' 'source' 'pref. station' and on selecting this was presented with TWO options, AUTO (as usual) and another station which was identified as (something like) RTN 3. No data semed to have been transmitted. This was in the area of Blackburn & Clitheroe, Lancs.

Perhaps the system is being tested prior to introduction?

Sadly it's more likely that it picked up a continental or Eire station broadcsting TMC, the weather is just right for some long range skip. Some countries don't charge for TMC and so your unit would happily process TMC data in those countries.

Oh Well, never mind. I enjoyed it while it lasted though! Green is far prettier than Red!

That thought that it was foregign did pass through my mind, because I was driving on rising ground to the east of the Irish Sea, perhaps its come from EIRE?

If the display said "RTE" rather than "RTN" then, yes, this would be from Eire.

I think the Trafficmaster based TMC service is being trialled in this area, as there have been a number of reports of strange TMC signals from that area over the last few months.

However, I suspect that the Summer will bring an updated DVD with the TMC codes on it as opposed to a new service.

I think Darren summed it up earlier in this thread...

So, the first question is does your '01 unit support TMC? If it does, you simply need to buy a more expensive SatNav CD with TMC codes on it. If it doesn't, you'll probably need to upgrade your car to a new one...

The Audi DVD (A8, A6 and now A4) based maps supplied by Navteq have TMC active for various countires in mainland Europe; in general, UK cars with the DVD Nav show the TMC to be active, somewhat misleading as it isn't active in the UK. A deal was signed between Audi UK and RAC Traffic Master to provide this data to UK users back in May (if I remember correctly) this year; a new DVD disk is supposed to be available 'after November' 2005 which will make this data available.

If you purchased a car having been told the TMC worked in the UK (as I was; I asked the question explicitly) then you should insist on a free upgrade to the new DVD as the vehicle sold was not as specified.

CD based Nav systems (e.g. 2001 onwards A4 Navigation Plus) systems use Tele Atlas CDs; these have been available since 2004 with active TMC in the UK, the data is provided by ITIS.

Having used both Tele Atlas and Navteq maps in my current and previous Audis, where the CD only covers the UK, its route 'appropriateness' and accuracy, in my experience, is much better than the Navteq disks.
