Hi,
Most people seem to position their GPS device on/around their dashboard.
For a moment, bear with me and assume that one is not interested in viewing the map that's being displayed whilst driving - that audio prompts are key.
In which case, does the device necessarily need to be positioned as above - would it not be sufficient to place it say on/around the gearstick in a cup holder or some such?
Many thanks. |

As per GPS I assume you mean the receiver - that can go anywhere you like even in the glove box out of site if it works in there (many of the new ones do) - If you are refering to the PDA itself then you need it in your line of sight as the instructions are both spoken and screen driven at the same time "exit ahead" when spoken will make you turn off the M way at the wrong time, where as a glance at the screen will show 1,2 miles to go - big difference (as it is referring to the same junction), use the PDA as a heads up device where you can see it at a glance, on the parcel shelf its a waste of time - Mike |

I presume you mean using a bluetooth receiver. If this is the case it's personal preference, if you don't want to view the maps. I have my XDA II in a trough in the centre console just below the handbrake, with earphones in one ear. This allows me to definitely hear it above any music that is playing. The only problem with this is you don't have the facility to check whether it really does mean second exit off a roundabout or next exit off a motorway. In the main it works pretty well for me.

If you only want audio instructions then yes, so long as the receiver has a signal then you can position it anywhere. I have heard of motorcyclists who keep the PDA in a rucksack and use headphones to pipe the audio feed into their helmets. _________________ Tim |

Sometimes the actual receiver and the display are integrated into one unit, quite often they are not. It looks like you are assuming a TomTomGO type device where the display and the receiver are linked.
I personally have a bluetooth receiver which talks to my phone, and yes, you can put it pretty much anywhere. I usually have it in the cup holder next to my gearstick and it gets a very good signal. |

I have a Mio 168RS which I position on the driver's side close to his/her window and the steering wheel. That way its not obstructing my field of view yet is almost heads up. I use the voice prompts most of the time and only glance at the display to verify any confusion in the upcoming turn. But watch out for a fast grab from a passing motor cyclist or pedestrian whishing to obtain your PND for free! |
