I'm getting a new hx4700 shortly, and I plan to use it for in-car satnav. After some browsing (pocketgps is a great site!) I'm fairly sure I want to go down the TTN5 route. But, with which GPS unit?

I think the two obvious choices are to either get the TTN5 package with TT GPS unit, or to get the TTN5 software separately with a third part GPS unit - in particular, the BT338 seems a good choice.

The safest option seems to be to get the TTN5 package, and the receiver is (I believe) a SIRFIII chipset. And I've seen quite a few people having problems with the BT338. But there's also a good argument that the BT338 is a better unit - and at the end of the day a unit that gives the best results is probably the one to go for.

Any advice for someone new to the satnav/GPS game?

Thanks!

Both units are top choice. The BT-338 has a planar antenna, the TomTom receiver has a quad helix. This means the BT-338 wants to lie flat and the TomTom receiver wants to stand upright for best performance.

The only real disadvantage of the TomTom receiver is that the battery is not easily accessible. But with a special screwdriver it can be exchanged too. The battery is also considerably smaller than the BT-338 battery, resulting in shorter run time (8 hrs as opposed to 15 hrs).

Not sure if this has helped ;-)

Well - it's not really helped me choose, but it has helped confirm I'm on the right track. At least I know I can't go wrong :-)

The BT-338 might be best if it prefers to lie flat, since that's most likely what it'll be doing in my car :-)

When you talk about battery time, is that running time or standby time?
