Driving around today had a strange screen pop up,

SHUTTING DOWN

Shutting down your TomTom go 920 in 10 seconds,

It then counts down from 10 seconds to zero and if you do not touch the cancel button it will shut down...

this happens if a route it set or not...

what a peice of work eh? maybe designed to keep you awake at the wheel...

Just found this on the TomTom website so i thinking does my 920 think it's charging via a PC fed USB even whilst in my car???

Question
Why does my device switch off even though it is connected to my computer via USB?
Answer
When you connect your TomTom device to a computer using the USB cable, your device asks if you want to connect to your computer.

If you select No, the device will slow charge via the computer and automatically switch off if you do not tap the screen for three minutes, in order to charge faster.

To quick charge and operate your TomTom device at the same time we recommend that you use the USB home charger. The USB home charger is available as an accessory.

You can operate your device using TomTom HOME while using the home charger or the USB cable:

Connect your device to your computer.
Your device asks if you want to connect to your computer. Tap Yes.
In TomTom HOME click Operate my device.

Sounds like your in-car power cable to your 920 has a connection problem.

The idea being when you turn your ignition off and the cigarette lighter power goes off your tomtom will turn itself off.

You can change the setting for this I think under preferences and power saving.

Hummer's right, it's nothing to do with thinking its connected to a PC.
Keep half an eye on the green light on the charger. Cigarette lighter sockets are notorious for making bad connections (especially if the actual cigarette lighter used to be used in it - think where the ash goes!)

If you want to get rid of it, on a Go 720 the option is in change preferences page 7 of 8 "Battery saving". Go past the first screen about whether to turn off the screen, and you get to "Switch off when external power is lost". Un-tick it to ignore any intermittent connection problems.
