I remember a decision some 25 years ago, that the "anglophile world" would join the SI system too and gets rid of "miles", "inches", "galons", "fahrenheit", "pounds", "calories", ...
What has happened in the meantime? Do you still measure your speed in "furlong per fortnight"? Did you know the NASA trashed a billion dollar Mars mission lately because one supplier "assumed the numbers where in inches"? |

Hi smallfreak
I have been driving cars and motorcycles that have miles on the Speedo and sign posts which measure distance the same way for more years than I can remember and because of this I would like to see miles on the screen of my Tomtom go and not KPH

Good heavens above man. We're British. Many years ago we had an Empire run by our Emperor, then we downsized to a Kingdown run by a King. Not we have a country - run by Tony Blair.
Why should we move headlong into these fuzzy wuzzy units of measure when we can confuse ourselves by mixing them up? We now have petrol in litres, but we measure a vehcle consumption in miles per gallon. We grudingly buy meat and veg by the kilo because there's a raft of Euro Regulations that say we must, else we face incarceration and public flogging.
Our weather people show temperature in Celcius, but wind speed in miles per hour and rainfall in inches.
People under 35 give their weight in kilos, but the rest of us old f*rts work in stones and lbs. This is a good psychological move as the ladies losing weight can claim to have lost 2 pounds, which sounds much better than 0.45 kilos.
It's bad enough that when you phone the DVLA you get the option of a Welsh speaking voice. Why should we pander to these minimalist groups
?
Earlier this week we had the 200 year anniversary of beating Jonny Frenchman at Trafalgar. Standards have been slipping ever since.
Yours,
The Grumpy Old Man. |

The day after the recent French "NO" vote on the European constitution there was a cartoon in the paper of a market stall holder with a notice "We sell bent cucumbers by the pound" :D _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)
