Rookie needs a bit of advice - Trip to Nepal

hello, can any one help I am looking for a hand held GPS device to aid my trek around Asia more specifically my trek to Everest Base camp, one that allows me to set way points would be cool, oh and is it possible for someone to track my position online (or am I in the realms of Hollywood).

Just don't want to get riped off by some high street shop!

Garmin would be my recommendation here, forget on-line tracking for starters though! The eTrex range would be ideal, you're not going to get mapping that's of any use so look at the eTrex Summit that has a barometric altimeter as well, see here.

And I should add, good luck, the experience of a lifetime, are you ascending Everest or just going as far as base?

it was a bizarre decision, I have a good job, etc etc, but if I don't do it now when will I...... will be buying my GPS unit over the next week or so, watch my luck the bloody things won't work in Nepal

When you get an opportunity like that its not a bizarre decision. After all you have all your life to work!!

And don't worry about GPS units in Nepal, any unit chosen will work fine there.

I'd agree with Darren about Garmin units. They are pretty rugged which is what you want for outdoors use.

Definately check out the higher spec models which have a barometric altimeter and electronic compass. The lesser models will give you your height and heading but the ones with added sensors might be worth the extra money you pay.

Make sure the GPS runs on AA or AAA batteries - you may have trouble finding a mains outlet to charge up the rechargable ones.

You might want to find a retailer which has a showroom and you can have a look at the various models that are available. If you get an Etrex Vista-C then you can buy the streetmaps for it and use it for street mapping and autorouting when you get home. (There aren't any maps for Nepal)
