Hi all
Our battery dies in France last week just before entering Paris!!!!
Can I replace this myself or does it need to go to a dealer and where on earth do you get batteries from????
This our first machine and was bought off a friend so no warrenty.
Pls help as we need it for Germany next month.

Some dealers will only tell you that you can't replace the battery (I think that is the oficial position) - once the battery has expired it is junk!However, I am sure that there will be places which will be able to supply some sort of replacement, and as you say you have no warranty to worry about (it is possible that some soldering may be required)
Certainly Evesham Micros, where I got mine, say that the battery is not replaceable and the unit must be replaced when the battery expires. |

As a matter of interest, what sort of life can one expect from a Mio battery, and what are the symptoms of impending failure - if any?

It's not usual to have a total failure, normally you just slowly loose capacity, Li-ion batteries like to be charged up, but not over charged, when that green light comes on turn the charger off.
Li-ion battery lifespan is approximately 1000 charge cycles, or about 2-4 years under normal operating conditions, then the capacity slowly decreases, so instead of getting say 3.5 hours GPS use it will go down to about 1 hour, but that is after say another 200-300 charge cycles.
Keeping the battery in a cool place can prolong its life but not in a period of extended storage. The Li-ion battery should be stored at 40 percent rather than full-charge state.
The battery ages even if not used. For best results, keep the battery cool. In addition, store the battery at a 40 percent charge level. Never fully charge or discharge the battery before storage. The 40 percent charge assures a stable condition even if self-discharge robs some of the battery's energy. Most battery manufacturers store Li-ion batteries at 15°C (59°F) and at 40 percent charge.
Keeping a PDA battery on constant charge and never using it is not good for the PDA battery. Run the battery down and recharging it at least once every month. |
