Newbie GPS questions.

Ok, hoping not to get burned too bad for asking these questions. Total newbie here so here goes:

I'm looking at the Lowrance Automotive iWAY 500c GPS for my car. I basically want to use it to travel the country, and around town. Now my questions are is this a good navigation system? Can you download free maps, because I've heard about the cd-roms that they sell.

I plan on driving from detroit, to los angeles, to seattle, to fargo, back home....are these navigation systems hard to figure out? what type of programs would i need to create these maps.
