POI Alert turned off with sound off??

I've been using 5 for a couple of days an think it is an improvement overall. However, I'm really surprised at what seem to be some fundamental mistakes - which would be normally picked up in any sort of decent beta testing. This site is a testament to it!
I have always used GPS assist (or Checkpoint) and found them excellent and really miss their absence. The poi alert in 5 is OK - but only OK.
The one thing that's bugging me is that it appears that when the sound (voice) is turned off this appears to also mute the POI alert. This is really annoying. Its obvious that you might not need guidance but you do need the alert! Is it a bug or am I just missing something?
