Now that I have had my TomTom a few weeks and finally got all the voices and zones working correctly, re: the voices, I am reminded of the Eric Morcambe Andre Preview sketch when Andre said to Eric "you are playing the wrong notes" and Eric replied "I am playing the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" and so it was for the voices and speed zones in my TomTom. However, I digress - nothing is perfect in this life and so it is with the TomTom. Every night on my way home from work TomTom announces "exit ahead" right where there is a major arterial junction. However, one look at the map on TomTom and you can see the distance to the exit at 1.4 miles. Now anyone new to the area would if they listened to TomTom exit at the announcement, which would lead them away in the opposite direction to where they wanted to go. This arterial exit that TomTom indicates to leave from has been there for at least eight years - very confusing for non local driver.

This is difficult. on most main roads you need advance warning. On the earlier system the warning was much less and caused problems.

On one occasion I was in a traffic jam on the M60 (or somewhere round Manchester) expecting to go straight on when the GO said "exit in 800 metres". The motorway (of the same number) actually exited left and I was 5 lanes to the right and level with the 300 m sign for the start of the slip road!

I think the increased warning is better.

The warning does say 'Exit ahead' and not 'take the exit'.

If you remember that it gives a 1mile reminder it's something I find very useful. I suppose it's something you get used to.

Normally I would agree with you, however, the advance warning it gives would lead you to suppose that the exit in question was the one 800 yards away, i.e. the one you are bearing down on to your left. As this particular exit is a main arterial route it is not unreasonable to assume that is the exit TomTom refers to. It is only after checking the display that you see the exit in question is 1.4 miles ahead. The thing is, quite often Jane never says a thing until you are 800 yards away from an exit. As I say, I know the area, but anyone unfamiliar with the road would end up going the opposite way an a hell of a detour. Having said all that, I do like my TomTom and I am looking forward to my forthcoming trip to France.
