Hi,

I am a total beginner. I have an IPAQ 2210 with a Polstar BT GPS receiver, 512 mb SD Card. I have paired the GPS with my IPAQ, I have installed the GPS test file from the Polstar website and this appears to confirm that the two bits of kit will work together as I recieve 3 to 8 satellite wherever I got and the test prog reports my heading, Lat/Long etc.

I am stumbling though with a choice of software to use. I have been looking at some on ebay that adertises as beingsimilar to TOM TOM but is much better (£19.99) the price seems right for me.

I also have MS Autoroute on my PC and have pocket streets on my IPAQ, I have copied a map in the correct format to my IPAQ but can't seem to get this to work. I keep getting the message "The comm port is open but no signal is being received". The BT seems to be working. What can I do with pocket streets, is it worth the hassle?

I have tons of questions but these are the most important just now.

I hope I've made sense.

I would be wary of items on EBAY for prices as low as £19.99 they are likely to be pirate copies and as such will have no warranty or support from the manufacturer should things go wrong.

Much better to buy a legit copy from a reputable retailer such as the ones displayed down the right edge of the page. The only exception would be purchasing legit second hand software but how would you know?

What software? it depends on your requirements and budget.
Good ones are TomTom and Navman but will cost considerably more than £20

What version of AutoRoute do you have? PocketStreets will work OK on the 2210, it is very basic and does have POI's taken from AutoRoute but very little map detail . It will show your position in real time on the street map you download to the iPAQ but you cannot plot routes or navigate with it.
The message "The comm port is open but no signal is being received" suggests that you have not configured PocketStreets correctly on the GPS cofiguration page. How you set it depends on the version you have.

Ian,

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll probably take your advice re the software, I would think I could stretch to £100, depends how much I can get my wife interested and if she can see a benefit then we're rolling. I have MS Autoroute 2004 and have managed to get the pocket streets to work. As you sau it is a little basic but it is a good start to see my position being continually displayed on the IPAQ screen. Are there any other good GPS software programs other than TOM TOM or Navman?
