Hi,
I have trolled the internet reading reviews of various portable GPS Sat Nav systems but am now at a loss as to which to buy.
The PocketGPS World site is easily the best I have found so thought what better place than here to ask advice.
Basically my needs are quite basic and are as follows:
I want a portable GPS system capable of being recharged in the home (my cigarette lighter blows the car's fuses when used - long story!)
I only need a UK road based one with clear voice instructions.
I would prefer one with full postcode search capability (ie 7 digits)
I would like one proven to be reliable.
Thats it really, nothing fancy.
Any advice that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Clank,
to the forum!
If you want something basic, that you just plonk onto the dash, that can use custom POIs (Points of Interest) and 7 digit postcodes then the TomTom Go 300 sounds ideal for you.

Hi Robert, thanks for your welcome.
I have looked at the TOM TOM 300 as advised, via this website:
http://www.technologytemple.co.uk/product.php?productid=16380&cat=318&page=1
On the 'whats in the box' section it states:
Cigarette lighter cable, with 12-24V cigarette lighter adapter which can also be used in trucks. This is the normal way of providing power to TomTom GO when it's in your vehicle.
Does this mean that it doesnt include a recharging at home capability?
Sorry for this possibly daft question but as you can probably gather I'm a technophobe!

TomTom dropped the mains charger from the list of included accessories for the GO 300 but it can be had for £10 or so from most PDA retailers. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks for your help guys its appreciated.
I think I will buy the tomtom 300 as advised, but just a quick q if i may?
I have been told by a car guru here at work (saying that he drives a ford mondeo...) that the Mio 268/269 is a top quality piece of kit for my needs.
Is he right? The reviews I have read for this point to it being more of a European driver oriented bit of gear?

Hi, me again.
Sorry to be a pain but this is my last and final question.
Searching through these excellent forums I found this recent exchange:
22/04/05 In the interest of accuracy, the current TT GO does not accept full postcodes.
22/04/05 Tim, that's not true any more. The current GO with the current version 5.0 software does support full postcodes, doesn't it?
23/04/05 No, not without the new mapdata, which hasn't been released yet
What are the implications here if I buy a Tom Tom 300...ie will it allow 7 digit post code searches?

Whilst the Mio268/269's are OK I don't personally rate them in the same league as TomTom GO, Navman iCN510 etc. There is very little community support for these units either. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi,
Am near enough just about to buy a tom tom 300 from global positioning systems. However if someone could answer my last post re the postcode facility that would be the clincher as it is now my only concern.
Cheers,
Simon. |

The GO 300 (and 500, 700) all come with the latest map data and PostCode look up facility.
The original GO can be upgraded to version 5 and with the purchase of the the latest map set they too will have PostCode lookup. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Don't you mean that the 500 and 700 WILL come with them? I was hoping to buy something this week but it looks like I've got to hold off for the 500 or 700 (I need Spain, Germany and Belgium in addition to the UK).
