I was given an iPAQ 3970 (never used) and I would like to hook up a GPS unit foir both auto and foot navigation. I do have a Magellan MeriPlat so I am familiar with using a dedicated handheld GPS unit, however I have never used a PPC. I understand that the 3970 is not one of the better PPC's (slow??) so is it worth bothering to hook up a GPS? I know that I can inexpensively make a manual connection (~$30.00) with cables from my MeriPlat to 3970 of for a few dollars more add the BAT01 (~$50.00) (wireless connection). Would I realize any other benfits by adding a dedicated Bluetooth GPS (eg. Globalsat BT-338 or Holux 236). I also have MS Streets & Trips 2005. Also are there any good GPS ulitities that would be good to add. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! |

You couldn't be more wrong. The 3970 is an excellent old PocketPC with 400 MHz processor and a good enough speaker - better than many newer Pocket PCs. All it's lacking is WiFi.
You can use any Bluetooth or serial GPS with this device. Even jackets...
Bluetooth is preferable particularly for mobile usage - it's not so much of an advantage in car. _________________ Lutz

My comment:"I understand that the 3970 is not one of the better PPC's (slow??) so is it worth bothering to hook up a GPS? "
Sorry, but I was going off of a review online where the person writing the review said it was a slow as some 200MHz PDA's. I stand corrected. Thank you. I still would like some input on the other questions. |

Whilst you can connect your Meridian it'll mean cables everywhere. A much better option woulds be to get the superb BT338, it really is the best GPS receiver available and will hold onto a signal where all the others fail.
Forget MS Pocket Street, it's very poor, get a good street navigation app and a good topographic app and you'll be sorted. _________________ Darren Griffin |

If you can live with the wires dangling around then you can go for your serial cable or BAT-01 contraption - that should work fine.
Every navigation software on the market will work with that device, and you can choose depending on your preferences (street/outdoors, professional/leisure etc). GPS utilities are VisualGPSCE, WinFast Navigator, Crux_View, LocBrowser etc. It really depends on what you want to do with the GPS. _________________ Lutz

Thanks for the replies and software recommendations. Just a clarification, Ibendlin you said, "or BAT-01 contraption" . Have you found this device (or heard) that it does not perform up to expectations? I thought that I might start this way and wait until a few more of the new Bluetooth products with SiRFstarIII become available as I am not excited by the BT338 product (do not like having to turn it on every 8 to 10 minutes, not flash programable, and no serial input). I am hoping that other manufacturers will at least not have the unit cycle off all the time. Thanks once again. |

I rather meant it admiringly - as in Wallace and Gromit. Go for the BAT01. _________________ Lutz
