I have an Ipaq 4150 and TT3 with the bluetooth GPS and UK Postcodes. I want to buy the TT3 package with RZ1710 for her indoors, but i'm led to beleive it will not run with UK postcodes? My Question is can i just use my TT3 software, ie will it work with wired GPS? Also with regards TT5 and it's arrival, why do they not just update the maps rather than whole new software, surely a cheap new map for existing users would make sense, i'm sure we have all been taken down dirt tracks and through pedestrianised areas by out of date mapping!

Any help would be apreaciated!

I have TT3 running on an Ipaq RZ1710. No problems as long as you do not have any other programmes running in the background, otherwise it tends to run out of memory. It works fine, with a wired TT GPS unit.

The HP / TomTom bundle with the iPAQ rz1710 is not TomTom Navigator 3 - it's TomTom Navigator 2004 HP Edition, which is Navigator 4.4 and 39x maps. It's basically the same software and maps as was on Go before the Go version 5 software was released. There's no SDK for Navigator 2004, so there's no possibility of external software working with it.

TomTom's belief is that the rz1710 really isn't up to the demands of Navigator 3. You can't use your TomTom Navigator 3 software on any machine you bought for your wife - to do so would be a licence breach (the licence restricts the software to use on a single navigation system).

With only 32MB of RAM and no Bluetooth, the rz1710 is rather limited - I'd encourage you to consider the hx2110 instead. The hx2110 TomTom bundle uses the same software as the rz1710 bundle, but includes a better iPAQ and uses a Bluetooth GPS.

To be honest, now is probably not the time to buy a new setup - you'll probably be better off waiting for the release of Navigator 5, which, unless I'm mistaken, is bundled with the new TomTom Bluetooth GPS, not the old one.

As for upgrades, the licence fee to upgrade the maps is much of the cost of an upgrade (there is a per upgrade fee to be paid to the map supplier for supplying updated maps), as can be witnessed by the Go version 5 software being a free upgrade, but a map upgrade being chargeable. TomTom's upgrade charges are about the cheapest in the industry.

My understanding is that TomTom haven't yet released the upgrade information for Pocket PC users, and the information that came out during and immediately after CeBIT was confused (not helped by the Navigator 5 press release being withdrawn and revised twice). It will be a case of waiting to see what is eventually announced.

Thanks for the info! Food for thought, thought i may be able to get a cheap fix, but looks unlikely

Also does anybody have experiance of these cheapo mia systems halfords are offering. Any good? I'm by no means a big fan of TT3 but when it connects properly and does not take me down dirt tracks or over pedestrian only bridges it works well. Do these £300 systems have 3D and full postcode search?

Full postcodes is not a common feature at the moment. It is in TomTom Navigator 5 (when it's available) and AA Navigator. I can't think of any other Pocket PC or PND systems that do have full postcodes, but I may be wrong over that.

Just for info, the TT3 I have running on a RZ1710 is my daughters, and she purchased the TT3 software in addition to my copy, so it is very legal. Like I said, it works fine. It is not the Navigation package that you can buy for the RZ1710.

Legal or not, I would not have a problem loading my software onto my wife's PDA if she had one, unfortunately (or fortunately) she is a technophobe. Wink
