Hello all
I'm new to GPS on the pocket PC. I would to use the Tom Tom Version 3 but have an older compaq Ipaq. My ipaq is a compaq 3760 running ver 2002 (3.0). It has a 206 Mhz processor and i have a dual PCMCIA jack with a 5 GB hard drive.
What i would like to know is would this version of Tom Tom run on my ipaq. One other thing is i as going to buy the SysOnChip GPS will this work as well.
Many thanks

Yes, TomTom Navigator (including version 5) runs fine on these older iPAQs. For a GPS receiver however I would recommend a serial type, although CF should work too. Just don't expect too much battery life away from the car. _________________ Lutz

Thanks for the reply, my main question was about tom tom but as I’ll only be using it in the car power is not a problem for me.
Thanks again

I have TT3 on an 3850 and it's OK 95% of the time. Occasionaly the re-route time means I've actually driven past the possible turn before TT3 has completed it's calulations...
I'm minded the ideal iPaq for TT3 is the 3970 - bluetooth, good speaker volume, SDIO slot, transreflective screen and the 400Mhz CPU. |

Mine is a 3970 and it's never let me down on any applications. To be honest, I'm a bit scared of trading up when I read about the shortcomings of newer models.
NB The on/off button has a tendency to dislodge, whoch I understand is common on 3970s. |

The calculation speed depends greatly on the speed of the SD card.
Looking at Lands End to John O'Groats on my 2210 (which is faster than my old 3850) I have 3 SD cards:
256 Integral SDMCC = 4 mins 5 secs,
256 Integral 66x = 2 min 13 secs,
256 Lexar 32x = 1 min 30 secs.
This of course affects the re-route time.

Just to add to this, I'm running a 3830 which only has 32MB of RAM. I find re-routes to be almost instantaneous, as the real work is being done on a relatively fast CF card.
I struggled for a year (frequent lockups etc) with what I subsequently discovered was an inferior CF card, rather than a lack of onboard programme memory which suggested itself as being the culprit.
If you can get a setup which stores the maps on a CF card rather than an SD card then I think you will benefit. Obviously a better quality CF card is desirable. I believe that SD performance started to improve with the 39** series iPAQ. More importantly than with CF there seems to be a great disparity of performance with different brands of SD cards.
Hope that helps. _________________ John
