Newby - complete system - best value for money

I am thinking of buying a gps system possibly based on a pda. But I don't have any experience of pda's or sat nav equipment. So I really need someone to point me in the right direction so that I don't spend a fortune and end up with egg all over.
Can anyone help?

I would suggest a good read of the reviews on this site, thats what I did. There are so many options these days each offering something diffrent, the best for one person wont be the same for the next.
