Firstly, hello!

I've had a peek around the forums and seen plenty of comprehensive posts, although being new to all this stuff, I'm finding it hard to keep up, and understand it all.

So... on this basis, I'm hoping some one can point me in the right direction. I'm afraid I'm a TOTAL newbie and need someone with patience to offer advice.

I have wanted a TomTom unit for ages, handy for when we do ghost stuff and have to go to new places! But I've tried to do it the 'cheaper' way via a PDA.

I have just accquired the following:

A Compaq iPaq 3870. A Tom Tom car holder, charger and GPS receiver ariel, and TomTom Navigator 2 on CD. (these are 2nd hand)

I'm just waiting for my new CF jacket, 256MB SD Card and a 256MB CF Card to come.

What I want to know is.... When I pop the windscreen holder in the car, put the PDA on charge etc etc, where should I place the GPS ariel?? Somewhere on the dashboard? And will my mobile phone affect it's signal?
(My mobile is not mounted in my car, it's simply in my door pocket when in transit)

Also, I'm assured, by the person I got it from, that the CD with Tom Tom Navigator 2 on is 'as new' because it's never been registered or used. Will this entitle me to free updates? Or is Navigator 2 a good solid piece of software anyway?

I've also seen mentions of other software downloaded from these forums. Will these be of benefit, or should I wait untill I'm a more confident user?

Sorry for all the questions, but ANY help or advice will be very gratefully received!

Thanks in advance,

Si

Hi there and welcome.

You can put the GPS receiver (it's a bit more than just an aerial) somewhere on the dashboard - as for upfront as possible so the receiver has a good chance of viewing some sky.

The mobile phone does not interfere.

TomTom Navigator 2 is a good software, albeit a tad old by now. Updates are no longer free but you will be able to get and upgrade to TomTom Navigator 5 for under 100 EUR.

Once you got used to TomTom you can then try the POI downloads, for example speed (oops safety) camera locations - those can be shown on the TomTom maps.

Hi lbendlin

Many thanks for your reply and the welcome!

I'm going to give it a go today as I finally got my SD card yesterday so was able to load everything up. *fingers crossed*

Thanks for the reassurance about TTN2! I'm going to use it for a while to get used to it and see how it goes.

And I promise to not call it an aerial again Embarassed Laughing Out Loud.

Sorry for bumping, not been able to get in again till now!

Cheers,

Si
