I am in the market to buy a new pocket PC and GPS software. I would like to use it as a PDA, plus in car satnav and for handheld outdoor use (hill walking) I was thinking about mid-range Ipaq (maybe 2410) and Co-Pilot 5 GPS. I also considered Acer. Any advice appreciated.

Hmmm.....it seems nobody wants to express their opinion on this so I had a look through the forums. I occurred that lots of folks had problems with either the hardware locking up or the software giving problems or not fulfilling the needs that I woinder if the technology here hasn't really arrived yet in a reliable state. Maybe I should just buy some up to date roadmaps and a few Ordnance Survey sheets and forget it. Or can somebody convince me otherwise?

Hi Emily
If it were me I would get something like a second hand garmin GPS12 for hill walking and use it in conjunction with OS maps there is no mapping with GPS12 but the Battery lasts for 12 hours which is more than any pocket PC plus I think that GPS should be used as an aid not stand alone unit for outdoor persuits imagine getting stuck half way up a Munro with no map and compass and the GPS battery has run out. For the car I would get one of the bundle's with a pocket PC system but be wary of the PNA route which you can not get other software for.

cheers Bob

Hello Bob

Thanks, that's just the sort of advice I was after. I use the car a lot to go out into the country (I am in Central Scotland) so I was hoping that there would be something that would cover me for in car and outdoor use having nav for in the car and maybe Ordnance Maps for outdoor use. The "pocket PC" bit is not really important to me, as I have a laptop.

I have a Tungsten T5 and want to get something that'll do car but also be useful for walking. Has anyone got experience of using TomTom (or similar) for this? Or should I get something like Garmin?

Also, what topographical software if available for Palm OS. On the page on this site there is only Maptech shown which I was told is mainly for US use. Is this right?

Thanks.
