I've had GPS for the car for some time (various hardware over the years, but currently D3, iPAQ and bluetooth unit) and I am considering getting something similar for hiking and bike riding.

It seems to be down to 3 main products:Anquet, Tracklogs and Memory Map. All 3 come with good references.

I want to be able to plan a route at home, down load to GPS and have some idea where I am going, and also perform the reverse whereby I can import data from GPS back into the home PC.

I'm not interested in taking the iPAQ out and about, but a few of GPS units do come with some form of built in maps.

Any clues? Or is it down to personal preference. Memory map looks more established, whilst Tracklogs looks cheaper.

I understand you are not into calibrating your own maps? Otherwise there are a few more options (like OziExplorer) that have some more features)

Thanks for the swift reply - I did look at the others and they looked difficult to me! I quite fancied being able to fire up a tried and tested map and plotting the course etc.

Memory map looks like it has edge - a bit like TomTom vs D3.

I must admit I was shocked by the prices of the maps.

The shock will deepen when you notice that the topo maps require far bigger storage capacity, too 8O

True - but as the maps are only loaded on the PC for my needs I should be OK - I dread to think what the full 1:50,000 maps take up on a PPC let alone the 1:25000. I suppose you do just cut the required sections in.

What sort of support is there for the maps on the Garmins - most only have 8megs of memory?
