My handhelp GPS recently went unserviceable and so I thought I would try and buy add-ons for my Palm Clie SJ33. I intend to use the system as a standalone when out walking and occassionally in the car. I have found software on the internet and was considering buying a Haicom 204E or similar. From the information I have found, with the leads available I can only use it in my car. Do you know if there is a lead available to connect it directly from my Palm and will it power from my Palm. If not I can make my own lead, PS2 to Palm, but am not sure where to get the plugs and sockets as well as the pin-outs for the lead. Help.

You will have to make sure your GPS receiver runs the RS232 protocol over the wire (not PS/2 or USB). THen all you need to connect the Palm with teh receiver is GND, RxD and TxD. You then still need a way to power the receiver but I doubt the Palm will deliver the required Vpp 5V. You can use a standard battery pack (4 AA batteries) to power both the GPS and the Palm.

Thank you for your quick reply. The Haicom has a PS2 connector on the end with an extra lead to plug into the PS2 to a Serial connector (RS232). That would not be a problem for the data side. On the Haicom web page is the pinouts for the GPS unit so again not a problem. Do you know where I can get the pinouts for the Palm and where I could get a plug to fit it.

You should be able to get a Haicom cable for your Palm and it should not be that expensive.
The connector for the Palm alone is not cheap. So I do not think it is worth doing it yourself unless you want to do it for fun.
